Sketchy Thoughts 20260512 | My journey with pen and paper

There's something irreducible about pen and paper. No undo, no layers, no filters. A direct record of every committed mark. Sketchy Thoughts is that record: a weekly document of the daily sketching process. The hesitations, the breakthroughs, the moments when the pen finds its own way. This week covers May 11–12, including a lunchtime cyclops, a three-headed bird born from a Kelly Russo collage, and a composition that refused to be finished — because some images are better left open to interpretation.

Documenting the week of May 11-12

After last weeks article release and some internal debate, it occurred to me that I have been putting a touch of unnecessary stress upon my documentation process. After all, this is an additional part of the creative journey. Nothing here is set in stone nor required to exist.

Having noted that, we are going to finish up discussing some works that fell a little outside of last weeks projected deadline and then we will pick up again next week in a post-dated schedule. Basically a week behind the work flow. This will give me plenty of time to discuss and document accordingly without feeling like I am working under a sketching and writing deadline.

If this starts to feel like work then it will quickly lose it’s interest. We certainly do not want that! I have also decided to adopt the title of my mini-zine for these articles.

Daily Art | May 11-12

Sketch and Catch! One of our favorite lunchtime treats. Not sure where this magical cyclops came from but it sure was a fun one to work on in between tossing the ‘ol stuffed pig around.

I’m still chasing that use of color with these pencils. The more I work with them, the more the idea of moving into paint has started to knock around in my thoughts.

For now, we have a black ink outline and two pencil colors, plus two complimentary colors to accent those.

Purple/Pink, Blue/Yellow. There is a touch a black color pencil for good measure.

Up next, a new sketch based on my Substack artist tribute series. The series exists to showcase artists that inspire or resonate with me. Their work somehow ignites the spark and helps me put pen to paper in new and interesting ways.

The following sketch was inspired after discovering a collage by Kelly Russo / thepaperfool on Substack. Please check out their work and consider giving them a follow.

Trapped. Analog paper collage by Kelly Russo / @thepaperfool on Substack

With this series, I have typically stuck with a focused view of the artists main work to push myself into new directions. Something about this particular piece generated some slight revisions. In the true spirit of creative energy, it felt right to follow that muse and see what would happen. The vision of a three headed bird was calling to me.

May 11 - Three Headed Bird

After seeing the bird come to life, the next step was to work on that beautiful face. Though I really wanted to mimic it to the best of my ability, sometimes the pen finds its own way. In this case, the desperate and surprised look worked out.

May 11 - Bird and Face

Up next it was time to work on the grid and hand. It was one of the triggering points for my original interest. Something about the textures in commination, they really hit home and made me want to work on this concept.

After the grid was applied my thoughts turned to adding some dark hatching to the edges. Something that would make this moment pop off of the page. As I debated which shading style to apply the image was starting to shift in perspective.

Are we at the perspective of the bird being shown attention by the person or the bird coming to visit the person who is reaching out for some touch of kindness?

The more this duality struck me I dared not add additional influence to it. Instead, we can stop here and let the viewer decide in which way best suits them.

May 12: Trapped Re-imagined. Based on the collage art of Kelly Russo.

…is this the end?
