Welcome to the Edge of the World | October 16, 2026

This week takes us farther than the familiar landmarks go. Throw genre into the blender as we turn quiet moments into heavier reflections of time. We cover the light with a death shroud, open the world to a colorful sonic labyrinth and answer the call for ceremony, memory and reconnection.

Welcome to the Edge of the World | New Music Releases October 16, 2026

This week we explore the genre-bending efforts of Chicago, doom and gloom from the UK, the death shroud of Indianapolis, post-everything from Milano and the traditional/indigenous celebration of the spirits who walk upon all planes of the earth.

“If you dig these weekly heavy roundups, consider supporting our work with a digital coffee tip to keep the curation independent.”

New Album Releases …

Gorgonaut - Ayame / Independent

This is a bizarre, genre-bending adventure. Take every album you have ever heard, toss it in a blender and pour it over your laptop’s trash bin. This release chooses no boundaries or guardrails. It is more aligned with a sporadic Mr. Bungle, ADD adventure than anything else. In place of a circus atmosphere they stabilize their house in djent-adjacent metal, a side of jazz ethics and clean vocals to balance-or add to-the confusion. Terrific, strange, glitchy, very interesting.

THRAKIAN - The Way / Aonair Records

Slow, chugging, post-metal with a grumbling, death metal style vocal. The percussion can and does lean into double-bass drive while guitars remain trenched in bludgeoning, gloomy vibes. The band dips into soft, sonic passages that touch on deeply emotional and moderately psychedelic segments. Those sections rewire the tone of the song as if providing a glimpse through a cracked doorway. For those brief moments the listener leans in. The temporary shift allows the recurring impact to feel heavier and heavier.

MOTHER OF GRAVES - The Light that Keeps Us / Profound Lore Records

Emotionally dense materials make up this batch of crushing death/doom crypt dwellers. The tunes lurch along as the harsh vocals shout their abuse toward you. Steady and powerful like a mountain top breaking loose, the transitions roll and crush. They carve the earth with intention and no care for the landscape that lies before them. Doom and gloom are the keys to this kingdom and the album is steady and focused on slaughtering whoever wears the crown. No masters.

THREESTEPSTOTHEOCEAN - Death of Permanence / Subsound Records

Choosing to walk on paths less traveled, this album invites the experimental listener on a journey through psychedelic, trip-hop, fusion and post-rock. It cuts and carves a sonic labyrinth that is exciting, mysterious, welcoming and colorful. The maze is complete with spaces where one can sit in observation, relax, refresh their spirit and move forward at the proper pace. A finish line is not the focus of this material. Instead we find a rhythmic delivery that allows us to enjoy the current moment and marvel at the vast and expanding universe that surrounds us. An A+ listen and highly recommended, if you trust my recommendations.

Tzompantli - Temilotzin / 20 Buck Spin

Sit back and let these sounds of ceremony call to you. There is an unseen element that surrounds us. Some may find it a call to spirits of previous years. Those spirits who continue to circle our world and show us guidance. Others may suggest some type of magnetic force that influences our minds and hearts. Either way, you can feel the purity of heart pounding in the this EP. It is a welcomed feeling to reconnect with. For many it is a forgotten age. An age that carried our bodies to this place. Now, engulfed in a world of plastic and metal, it is slowly being pushed into the shadows. For every push there is also a pull. Let the light of the spirits shine brighter today and heal our sickness.
