Melvins 1983 - Thunderball
(rock, sludge, experimental)
(Aberdeen/Montesano, WA)
(Ipecac Recordings)
Adding another drop to the discography bucket that runneth over, Thunderball by Melvins 1983 is another welcome drink from the bands creative well.
Bringing an initial heavy tone with the album opener, one can imagine the swirling pit energy in a live sequence. In true form, the band drifts and shifts, leaving the listener unsure of what is to follow. It's been a fun tactic the Melvins have implemented over their 40+ year period in music. Whip the fans up into an energetic fury and then swaddle them in a noise based confusion as they cry like children for "the other stuff". Return with a new direction and change it up again. Yet, every step of the way it is uniquely the sound of the Melvins and is always evolving.
The godfathers of sludge have once again made their presence known and remain one of the greatest to ever do it.
