It's that time. Friday has arrived and with it comes an entirely fresh list of new releases that I find worthy of discussion. Let's dig in and turn up that volume.
Hypostasis by SUNNIVA / Svart Records
https://sunniva.bandcamp.com/album/hypostasis
Turku-based sludge metal force Sunniva was formed in 2016 out of a shared hunger for the raw sonic power of heavy music. The band's name, derived from the Old English Sunngifu, meaning "gift of the sun", hints at the layered darkness and light woven into their sound.
Stormcaller by Krigsgrav / Willowtip Records
https://krigsgrav.bandcamp.com/album/stormcaller
Dallas (TX) - A storm is brewing. Long-running, atmospheric Blackened Doom quartet, Krigsgrav, is now ready to release Stormcaller, their first album for the label and eighth full-length overall.
ENEMY IN MIRRORS by Solicitor / Gates of Hell Records
https://solicitor-speedmetal.bandcamp.com/album/enemy-in-mirrors
Seattle (WA) - Sölicitör are bringing forth their sophomore studio album of classic 80s style speed metal fury! Enemy in Mirrors is ten songs of haunting, powerful and destructive metal mania.
The Bestiary by Castle Rat / King Volume Records (North America) & Blues Funeral Recordings (UK/Europe)
https://castlerat.bandcamp.com/album/the-bestiary
Castle Rat is a Medieval Fantasy Heavy Metal band hailing from NYC, led by “The Rat Queen”, Riley Pinkerton, on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. On her mission to expand and defend “The Realm” from those who seek to destroy it, The Rat Queen is joined by “The Count” (Franco Vittore), on lead guitar and backing vocals; “The Plague Doctor” (Charley Ruddell), on bass; and “The All-Seeing Druid” (Joshua Strmic) on drums. Together they face the relentless wrath of their archnemesis: Death, Herself — “The Rat Reaperess.” Along their journey, Castle Rat have played in support of Monolord (SE), Acid King (CA), Green Lung (UK), and appeared at festivals included Desertfest NYC, RPM Fest and Hopsmoker, among others.
DUSTED ANGEL - This Side Of The Dirt / HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS
https://heavypsychsoundsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/dusted-angel-this-side-of-the-dirt
Dusted Angel is a band that likes to keep it in the family. Made up of a group of close friends who have known each other since the early 80s — stemming from playing in various intertwined bands, engraved in the extended Santa Cruz scene — the band features Clifford Dinsmore on vocals (Bl'ast!, Seized Up, Spaceboy), Ed Gregor on guitar (Hedgehog, No Use For A Name), Eric "Dog" Fieber on guitar (Mock, Creature, Fire Sermon) Steve Ilse on drums (Creature, Herbert, Automatic Animal) and Eliot Young (Lost in Line, Seance) on bass.
Songs To Sun by Stoned Jesus / Season of Mist
https://stonedjesus.bandcamp.com/album/songs-to-sun
Songs to Sun is the first album in a forthcoming trilogy that once complete, will stand as the pinnacle of what's been a decades-long trip for Stoned Jesus. While picking up where Father Light left off, Sydorenko and his new mates still nod to Seven Thunders Roar and The Harvest along the way. But by merging metal's fiery intensity with mind-melting grooves, vintage prog and their catchiest choruses yet, they bring the many distinct phases of Stoned Jesus to a bright, burning head.
Merciless Suffering by DYING REMAINS / Maggot Stomp
https://dyingremains-maggotstomp.bandcamp.com/album/merciless-suffering
Dying Remains’ debut full-length, Merciless Suffering, is a masterclass in songwriting, delivering an uncompromising blend of crushing brutality and catchy, well-crafted moments that have made the genre a monolithic force. This is death metal for those who appreciate the genre's time-tested foundation. Dying Remains brings build upon a mid-tempo, catchy blend of death metal similar to acts like Morta Skuld, Jungle Rot, and Obituary while still keeping things fresh and exciting for a new generation of death metal to take root.
The Devil is Always Looking for Souls by EVILCULT / Awakening Records
https://awakeningrecordscn.bandcamp.com/album/the-devil-is-always-looking-for-souls
Summoned from the depths of Brazil's fertile metal scene, Evilcult returns with their most savage offering to date: Triumph of Evil. This is not for the trendy or the timid. This is an unholy sacrament of blackened speed and thrash, a raw, blistering assault that spits on the polished corpses of modern metal. Forged with the venomous spirit of '80s legends like Sodom and Bathory, and infused with the bestial energy of Brazilian titans like Sarcófago, this album is a masterclass in primitive, unapologetic aggression. Every riff is a razor, every solo is a ritual, and every lyric is a blasphemous decree. This is the sound of evil made flesh.
Intense Indifference by Vittra / Independent
https://vittraofficial.bandcamp.com/album/intense-indifference
Originally called Vildvittra, based on the characters created by Astrid Lindgren as part of Ronja Rövardotter [Swedish for Ronia, The Robber’s Daughter, a children’s fantasy book first published in 1981], their name later evolved into VITTRA, inspired by the mythical creatures appearing in Swedish folk stories. And while Swedish folk is a recurring theme weaving in and out of their music, the band is firmly rooted in melodic death and thrash metal in the vein of At The Gates, Dissection, and Megadeth.
Communion In Anguish by TITHE / Profound Lore Records
https://tithepdx.bandcamp.com/album/communion-in-anguish
TITHE draws influence from many dimensions of ominous, extreme music and themes to manifest their distinctive, hypnotic, grinding, death metal. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Matt Eiseman, vocalist/bassist Alex Huddleston, and drummer Kevin Swartz, the trio converges to create an arrangement even larger than the sum of its parts.
