Přílišnost (Excess), the third album by KOSTNATĚNÍ, thoroughly destroys any remaining comparisons to the band’s contemporaries. Following up on 2023’s critically-acclaimed Úpal and its blend of technical black metal with Middle Eastern folk, KOSTNATĚNÍ has packed into this bizarre base an even stranger array of influences that must be heard to be believed. The band’s signature “highbrow” progressive riffs, now played on a uniquely alt-tuned guitar, cleverly interweave with a mix of “lowbrow” metal genres and moody synthesizers to create the band’s heaviest, most compact and violent songs to date. Continuing with the band’s introspective themes, Přílišnost (Excess) is dedicated to the suffocating, destructive pursuit of self-perfection. Lyrically and musically, it pushes beyond all limits.

Tracing the arc of Obits’ formidable run: from their first self-released single (‘One Cross Apiece’) to fearless takes on Graham Nash’s ‘Military Madness’ and The Kid’s 1978 punk anthem ‘The City is Dead’, the album also features live recordings from their legendary 2012 set at Red 7 in Austin, Texas. Previously only available as a limited 7” bundled with Sub Pop mail-order copies of the band’s Bed and Bugs LP, fans can now get to hear tracks like ‘New August’, ‘Talking to the Dog’, and ‘Refund’ once more.

The project brings together two visionary musicians from opposite sides of the world: Yawning Man guitarist Gary Arce from the Californian Mojave Desert and vocalist and bassist Pia Isaksen from the cold and ever-inspiring grounds of Norway. Arce’s trademark cinematic guitar soundscapes provide a stark contrast to Isaksen's heavy and melodic compositions, as her ethereal vocals elevate the sound to dreamy shoegaze realms. This second offering dives deeper into the duo's dusk-to-dawn reveries, resulting in a masterful and moody exploration, at once beautifully experimental and utterly organic, pushed by the gentle percussions of drummer Robert Garson.
