Monuments in Ruin presents Three Albums to Celebrate the Spooky Season

Monuments in Ruin presents "Three Albums to Celebrate the Spooky Season"

Say your prayers and hug a loved one tightly as we prepare for the unseen to step out of the shadows and walk among our world once more. To help prepare for the occasion Monuments in Ruin has opened a portal to a few of our knowledgeable record related kindred spirits to unlock the code to a proper musical celebration of the afterlife reborn!

Hypaethral Records Picks

1. Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt. 1 & 2
Nothing is more iconically "Halloween" than the 13 minute epic "Halloween" by Helloween. These two albums come as a package for me, so I had to include them both. A perfect pair to kick off the spooky season

Part One:

Part Two:

Pt. Two https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mLeHpH6TxPhE5k4ahMS9bNNyW8iyhf-j0

2. Bohren & Der Club of Gore - Piano Nights
Almost nothing says "spooky season" to me more than Bohren & Der Club of Gore. The haunting piano and saxophone in the opening track "Im Rauch" blend perfectly with the wisps of cool fall air. Prepare for a chill

3. Mournful Congregation - The June Frost
Although the title references "June", we need to remember these guys are from Australia, where June marks the end of their fall season. From the ominous church bells in "Solemn Strikes the Funeral Chime" to the melancholic dirge of "A Slow March to the Burial", for me, this album is the epitome of "spooky".

Inherent Records Picks

1: Samhain III - November Coming Fire
Probably my all time favorite pick for the turning of the seasons. While the dead start to come alive to once again walk the earth, you'll find Samhain in my cassette deck or on my turntable. Sadly, this is one of those hard to find "shareable links" items. For now, take what you can until this link is no longer available.

2: The Mummies - Never Been Caught
You are gonna need a reclusive, shadowy, garage rock party to show off your freshly acquired candies. If that is indeed the case, this batch of loosely wrapped punk rock and rollers will be ready when it's time to crank up the stereo and burn off that sugar rush. Expect some dancing ghouls to come knockin' on the door.

3: The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Plastic Fang
This is the complete package. From the album title, throughout the artwork and directly pinpointed in the lyric direction, this rock and roll nightmare was conjured for the ultimate all hallows eve celebration. Once this album marks your palm, you'll watch as the fur grows under the moonlight and teeth drip with blood. This super fit for the holiday will carry you through a sweat drenched, ghoulish night out with nothing in mind except a good time.

Ripple Music Picks

1: It might be cliched, but first is always The Cramps "Psychedelic Jungle." Need me some Goo Goo Muck.

2: From Ripple, I'll choose Doctor Smoke "Dreamers and the Dead," with songs like "Reborn into Darkness" and "These Horrid Things."

3: Then for my last one, I'll throw you a curveball, Jet Black Berries, an 80's LA band, kinda loosely associated with the Paisley Underground, but with some dark goth influences, think they were on the Enigma label back when it was uber cool.   Album is Post Modern Ghosts, with the song "They Walk Among You."  and other classics like "Invocation" and "Psychic children of Doom"

Bonus: Honorable mention to singles, Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus because it just is, and although it's cliched and cheesy, there is no Halloween without Monster Mash.

Benighted – Ekbom (2024)
Album is named after a psychological condition that makes people believe their skin is crawling with bugs.

Strigoi – Viscera (2022)
A blackened and sludgy mixtape of misery that explores real and conceptual horror.

The Dutch masters of horror resurrect the gruesome story behind Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with their campiest album yet.
