Brujeria - Esto Es Brujeria
Posted by BOBBY RAYFIELD on
If you enjoy your metal a little heavier, a little angrier and a little less forgiving than the average record, Brujeria may be what you have been waiting for. It is crafted for maximum destruction at every turn. Maybe we should recognize that this is a type of super group but the music speaks its purpose clearly for those who may or may not speak the native language. Get in the pit or get out of the way.
Killer Mike - Michael

Killer Mike is one of the great voices in rap. He has transcended into a larger place in the music world. His actions show he stands true to the topics he writes about. This record is a very introspective and, though it presents in a place a strength, is a very open and emotional record. I usually try not to do a song by song breakdown but the music bed sample for the opening track is perfect to set the tone for reflection. As a bonus, it is great to hear the guest spots by Atlanta alumni. Voices you know if you know.
Yob - Elaborations of Carbon

One of the true unicorns in the heavy music world is Yob. The soulful spirit of the band is clear in all aspects. We are one within this universe. A cycle that will not be broken by the presence of humankind. We are one as a people. Treat each other with kindness. Together, the cycle continues in harmony. In discord, the cycle continues in hostility. Both send ripples through the universe. Yob is love.
Baroness - Stone

If you are familiar with the artwork of John Baizley you may also be familiar with the unique sound that Baroness delivers. Where most bands would take the heavier tones and use it to pulverize, Baroness have a welcoming delivery that could catch the ear of most any music fan while managing to keep the aggregation at arms length. Much like the artwork, Baroness paints with many color palettes. Speaking of, this is the first album to break the color coded title theme.
Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different

Every second of this album captured my attention. Their slow, funky groove took hold of my ears and the soft and sexy voice grabbed ahold of my heart. If this is the first time you are reading or hearing of the greatness of Bettty Davis, take this opportunity to treat yourself to one of the exceptional psych/funk artists of all time. If you dig documentaries, check out Betty – They Say I’m Different (2017).
