Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

Posted by BOBBY RAYFIELD on

The numbers all seem to land around the same area but there seems to be a little debate that muddies the water. What is clear is, the number of samples that make up Paul's Boutique is in the triple digits. A quick jump on the digital box pulled this quote. "According to Dust Brother Mike Simpson, Paul's Boutique contains "between 100 and 300" samples. Oh, you think that's crazy? Now consider how many remixes, alternate takes and endless enjoyment the Beastie Boys have provided for us. Another digital quote to close the thought. "Beastie Boys Celebrate 30th Anniversary of 'Paul's Boutique' With The Release of 6 Digital EPs featuring 21 Rare Remixes and B-Sides!" Shout out to Johnny Ryall, the Tennessee homie!

Radiohead - The King of Limbs

It may be a bit early to start down this path but Halloween 365 is basically ok with me. This album cover has a dark and gloomy vibe to it but Radiohead, much like Beck, has become one of my go to, front porch sitting with coffee bands. Though the end of August heat is smothering the afternoons, this album is perfect with a mild breeze in the evening and watching an occasional leaf drift softly from a tree to the ground.

Nirvana - Bleach

Where we previously discussed the Pixies and things already plastered all over the internet, it is known that Kurt Cobain was also a Pixies fan like the rest of us. It is worth noting, this album lands in the same timeline as Doolittle. Where history may report it as Nirvana taking a page from the Pixies to create their sound, reality does not give much time to consume, influence, write and record. Maybe it carried over into a later era for Nirvana but Bleach was likely well on its way to existence in parallel with Doolittle/Bleach. Something to consider. I'm open to further discussion.

Pixies - Doolittle

The album opens with the lyrics, "Got me a movie, I want you to know. Slicing up eyeballs, I want you to know." Well, after 34 years your fearless album reviewer decided this may or may not relate to a film by Salvador Dali titled Un Chien Andalou. As luck would have it, it's all in the actual lyrics, if i had bothered to read them. For years these words have screamed through my speakers yet I never even read what they were until now. The internet has covered this ground long before I caught on. Though it would be hilarious if Chien Andalusia translated as "slow to notice", it actually translates to "An Andalusian Dog". Tune in tomorrow when I learn how to tie my own shoes.

Black Sabbath - Never Say Die

Posted by BOBBY RAYFIELD on

Sometimes people tend to throw a little shade toward the last few Sabbath albums featuring Ozzy. Not sure what there is to dislike about this record. We have a catalog preceding it that is the stuff of legends. Compare Never Say Die to other albums released in 1978 and report back with your findings. Besides, Johnny Blade is basically the origin story for the Mister Crowley intro. It's great to hear artists experiment and grow. We may not always appreciate it though.
